Choosing car wheels or tires is not a tedious job only if you know the factors that affect their performance. The choice of tires for your car depends majorly upon two factors that are - 'where you use the car' and 'how you use it'. You can choose the best tires for your car from the variety available in auto tires market. A brief description about the different types of tires would help you decide the best one for your car. Depending upon the season or area in which the vehicle is to be used, the car tires are majorly classified as:

All-Season Tires
all_season_tires.jpegDesigned to give that perfect look and maximum performance in any weather or season, these auto tires can been seen in every new car from the production section. Such are 'the all season tires'. These tires are made with harder rubber compound that gives them a longer life. All-season auto tires come with tread block design that helps in water dispersion and smooth as well as quiet running. The design of these tires provide year round traction and therefore are popular as 'All-season Tires'.

Summer Tires or Performance Tires
If you drive fast and hard, then the best suitable tires for your car are – 'Performance tires or Summer tires'. These tires are best suited for faster cars owing to their ability to yield better performance and strong grip. You can notice these tires in motor racing. With softer rubber compound, these car tires are not good at pumping water out of the way on a wet road. This makes them ideal for a no-wet season, hence the name - summer tires.

Winter Tires or Snow & Ice Tires
Having larger tread block patterns, the winter tires are designed to perform in a better manner in winter conditions. These tread patterns help the tires to make way for themselves easily in snowy regions. With larger blocks, these tires make more noise than the performance tires. Auto tires manufacturers have come up with special snow tires with tiny metal studs fabricated into tread. The metal studs help in biting snow and ice. Most of the snow or winter tires come with a snowflake symbol carved on them.

Wet-Weather Tires
Wet weather tires are manufactured from softer compound than those of performance tires. These car tires have much mechanical grip and are capable of dispersing more water from the contact patch. Ideal for the wet weather, these tires heat up faster in wet conditions.

Mud Tires
If you have to often drive through muddy areas, then your car should definitely have mud tires. Mud tires are one of the types of car tires classified on the basis of the area of usage of the vehicles. These mud tires make driving easier and faster in such regions. With massive tread blocks, these automotive tires are ideally designed to be used only in muddy areas.

All-Terrain Tires
Since we have talked about all season tires, you should confuse them with all-terrain tires. All-terrain tires have specific usage of special vehicles. These car tires are used on small utility vehicles (SUVs) and light trucks. Bigger tread block patterns can be seen on these all terrain tires that create lesser noise on the roads. The usage of neither soft nor hard rubber compound in these tires helps in less surface contact with the road.

An Auto fuel system consist of number of automotive components that assist in supplying fuel to the engine's combustion chamber and regulating it, thereby preventing any loss of fuel.

fuel-supply-system.jpg The fuel supply system for internal combustion engines typically comprise a fuel delivery pipe to which fuel injectors are mounted through connectors, which lead to a fuel tank through a fuel pipe. Further, the connectors of the injectors extend upward to open at an upper portion in the delivery pipe. When the vehicle starts and the air and fuel vapor is produced in the fuel supply system, it is gradually introduced into the delivery pipe and rapidly injected through the connectors and the injectors into the combustion chamber of an engine.

The fuel supply system of an automobile comes into play when the person driving the automobile steps on the gas. The gas pedal is linked to a throttle valve which opens and closes depending upon how much the gas pedal has been pressed. The harder the press, more is the fuel supplied to the engine.

All of this is accomplished with the help of a valve called the fuel injector. The injector is capable of opening and closing many times each second as well as atomizing the fuel when it sprays it into the combustion chamber.

Automobile Filters

automobile-filter.jpg Automobile filter or an air filter is a device which purifies the air supplied to the engine by removing dust and other particulates from it. Air filters are essential because the air supplied to an engine needs to be free of pollutants, lest it damages the engine, contaminates the oil or causes it to malfunction. Most of today's automobiles using fuel injection technology utilize a pleated paper filter element in the form of a flat panel. The filter is positioned inside a plastic box linked to the throttle body.

Carburetor

The carburetor is an automotive component that mixes air and fuel for an internal combustion engine. Invented by Karl Benz before 1885, it's colloquially known as carb in North America and the UK. The construction of a typical carburetor entails a "barrel" through which the air rushes into the inlet Carburetor.jpg manifold of the engine. The shape of the barrel causes the airflow to increase in speed at the narrowest part. Fuel is introduced into the air stream through small holes located at narrowest part of the barrel. This operation mixes air and fuel before it is reaches the cylinder through the fuel injector.

Fuel Cell

Fuel cells are an electrochemical conversion devices, which produce electricity from fuel and an oxidant, when they react in the presence of an electrolyte. These cells continue to produce electricity as long as the reactants flow into the cell and the by-products flow out of it. Fuel cells can continue operation continuously till the necessary flows of electrolytes and reactants are maintained.

Fuel Injection System
fuel-injection-system.jpg
Fuel injection system refers to the set of automotive part which mix fuel with air in an internal combustion engine. The primary component of this system is the fuel injector, which is a computer controlled valve. When pressurized fuel is supplied to it, it delivers fine droplets of fuel and air mixture into the combustion chamber of the engine. It's a sophisticated piece of machinery and can open and close multiple times within a second. The quantity of the fuel supplied to the engine is determined by amount time the fuel injector stays open. This function is electronically controlled. The system also makes use of a lot of sensors to ensure that the right amount of fuel is sprayed into the cylinders.

Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is a vacuum device controlled mechanically or electrically to draw gasoline fromthe tank and supply it to the carburetor or the fuel injector. A fuel pump is an essential component of automobiles. Carburetor and fuel injected engines make use of different kinds of fuel pumps. While carbureted fuel-pump.jpg engines utilize low pressure mechanical pumps mounted outside the fuel tank, the fuel injected engines use electric fuel pumps that are mounted inside the fuel tank. At other times fuel injected engines have two pumps: one meant for low pressure/high volume supply and the other for high pressure/low volume supply.

Fuel Tank

The fuel tank is that part of an automobile engine, which stores the fuel supplied into the engine. Depending upon the type of automobile and fuels, fuel tanks vary in sizes, types and complexity of designs.

Buying Tips for Fuel Supply System Components

You can ensure quality automotive part supplies through the following buying tips.

1. Always prefer new auto parts instead of used ones.

2. Choose your suppliers carefully, establish a reasonable level of trust towards a supplier, through referrals, testimonial, or certifications.

3. Be wary of suppliers offering products at extraordinarily low prices.

4. Ensure the specifics of the products you require from the supplier, before placing the order, a sample inspection is often the best way to do it.

5. You need to understand the terms and conditions including warranties and guarantees associated with the supplies you order.

Industry Overview

The growth of the automobile fuel supply system industry is directly linked to the growth of the automobile industry as a whole. While at present the auto industry is going through a downturn in North America and Europe, other markets such as China and Russia are amongst the emerging markets.

Off late, plastics have been replacing steel as the material for the manufacture of fuel tanks. Estimates conclude that about 348,000 tonnes of steel was lost in 2006 and by 2013 about 419,000 tonnes of steel could be lost to plastic. The trend is expected to continue till the market is saturated. The increasing popularity of plastics is attributed to their being non-corrosive, lighter and more flexible than metal.

On another front the market potential for fuel-injection systems is also looking up owing to increasing environmental concerns. In fact reduction in exhaust emissions have already been witnessed due to the improvements in diesel engine design in Europe. The newer designs while lead to decreased emissions, enhance the automobile engine's performance.

Furthermore, technologies such as hybrid and electric cars are fast becoming popular around the world, which also require different fuel-injection systems. Also, fuel cells are expected to power these vehicles. On the whole the outlook for automobile fuel supply systems is promising.

This year has been tough on the auto industry worldwide, for the most part due to rising fuel prices. The North American auto industry has been especially hit.

In North America

The biggest buzz seems to have sprung form the Meryl Lynch report, and the idea that they couldn't rule out bankruptcy for the world's largest automobile manufacturer, General Motors. At the same time the company's stocks fell to a 54-year low. And all of it ocurred at a time when GM reported uninspiring sales figures (i.e. 265,937) in June this year.

In order to avoid bankruptcy, GM would need to raise $15 billion in cash as has been said. While the company hasn't responded to the report, but it thinks that it's got enough cash for 2008 and that it would take the required measures if needed.

However, it's not just GM that took the hit, Toyota's sales also came down by over 21%, while Ford's figures showed a drop of 28.1%. For the most part the mechanism seems to be the same, that is lower demand for gas-guzzlers owing to high fuel prices.

Meanwhile in Canada the trend has been replicated with the auto sales plummeting by 5.7 percent from last year to reach 159,500 vehicles in June. The drop is significantly higher than the 0.5 percent fall in May.

In Europe

It seems that the economic downturn and the fuel price hikes have impacted European industry too. This could be seen in the drop in the number of new vehicles registered in June. While in Spain the drop was to the tune of 31%, in Italy the registrations came down by 19.5%. However, surprising as it might seem, the German car sales have picked up despite the odds, by 1% in June, and so have the French auto sales, which registered an improvement of 2.1% from June last year.

In Asia

The Japanese auto industry isn't celebrating at all, If you take away the sales of minivehicles, the sales for June have come down by 3.6% year-on-year to halt at 281,261 units. There's also a sentiment around in North America that many Asian nations such as China, Japan, Korea bolster their auto industries with subsidies, but it's different for the industry in North America. At the same time, one reason the cheap labor in many Asian countries, which is because they don't have a well-unionized workforce, and hence don't demand hefty benefits as is the case in the west.

So How Long is it going to last?

Predictions were made earlier as well, wherein it was said that things could begin to look upfor North America by 2009. However given the present trends, some experts feel that for the North American industry revenues could decline in 2008 and 2009. And that we could see increasing losses as the year-end approaches.

Well, forecasts are after all forecasts. While the sun's certainly not expected any time soon, but what actually happens only time will tell.

Are you wary of paying your hard-earned cash over rising prices of fuels and maintenance of your automobiles? Then, don’t panic, it is a time to invest in an environment friendly bio diesel engine. There are so many new and revolutionary technologies like hybrid electrical vehicles and hydrogen-powered automobiles available in the market, but these technological advancements are bit expensive and could burn holes in your pocket. A simpler and a long term solution lies in the form of bio diesel and other vegetable fuel oils. Bio diesel is not a new term, it has been in existence since 1900 when Rudolf diesel introduced his cutting edge engine that ran on the peanut oil.

Bio diesel is suddenly rediscovered as the feasible alternative that is usually derived from renewable plant sources like peanuts, hemp seeds, rape seeds, grains and oils from vegetables. Bio diesel engines have an edge over the diesel or petrol driven engines. Widespread use of bio-diesel in an automobile engine leads to considerable reduction of unburned carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and other particulate matter as compared to diesel or petrol engines. Even the dangers arising from emissions of sulfur oxides and sulfates are also less in comparison with diesel engines.

Today, most of the vehicle owners prefer chemically processed bio-diesel to other fuels. There are innumerable benefits of having a bio-diesel engine. Firstly, bio-diesel is an environment friendly fuel. Secondly, it saves your money. Thirdly, there is an enormous reduction in emissions when opting to use pure bio diesel over petroleum diesel. Here are few wholesome tips that one can follow before converting their vehicles into bio-diesel:

  • First and foremost requirement is that you need to have a diesel engine car. Any engine that uses diesel fuel can easily be converted into bio-diesel provided it doesn’t have rubber seals in its fuel system. The rubber seals will crumble on the continuous exposure to vegetable oil as it a solvent.

  • Secondly, make use of vegetable oil fuel conversion kit in installing the bio diesel fuel engine. Keep the original gas tank for holding diesel. For bio diesel oil, install another tank. Make sure that kit must contain hoses that connects the vehicle’s radiator to bio diesel fuel tank as they help in transferring the heated oil from heat exchanger to final fuel filter inside the engine chamber.

  • Thirdly, filter the oil using filter bags of 0.5 microns. In order to extend the life of the automobile filter bag, allow the oil to first remain in the barrel for a time span of 7 days so that the particulate matter settles down easily. Then the next step is to pump the oil into a filter bag. Ignite you engine and wait till the engine and bio diesel gets warm.

  • After every six months its better to use a fuel injector or piston cleaner for removing excess carbon deposits. You can clean it by pouring a 12-ounce bottle of cleaner into the fuel tank.

  • Bio-diesel is the best alternative fuel as it has been tested completely for health effects under the 1990 Clean Air Act. Sometimes it is also combined with standard diesel and sold with the label of ‘bio-diesel’.

There are number of bio-diesel fuel conversion kits available in the market. It is a system that converts vegetable oil into a fuel, which can be used to drive those vehicles that run on diesel. The first and most common bio diesel fuel conversion kit is one, which has filter of that is used for processing waste vegetable oil. The second and lesser-known Bio diesel fuel Kit comprises of fuel tank, a heating system and diesel fuel injection system. Before buying a bio-diesel kit, make sure that it does not emit any fumes or an odour. A typical bio diesel fuel kit consists of an additional fuel tank, electric continuous flow heater, heat exchanger and electric switching unit. The price of these kits usually ranges from US $500 to US$ 1000.

Bio-diesel is an ideal fuel that does not pose any danger to our environment. The use of bio-diesel not only helps in maintaining our natural surroundings but also prevent us from various health hazards caused by other fuels. It is energy efficient and can make your automobile perform better and longer. Bio diesel or vegetable oil is economical and can be produced domestically with the help of lards and used cooking oils. It is a sustainable fuel for your automobiles, which is now being looked upon favorably. Worldwide, there is an ongoing trend of making vehicles compatible with bio-diesel fuel. Vehicles that a run on bio-diesel is surely the better substitute now and everyone must consider taking the benefits of it.

automotive-polish-paint.jpg
Psychologists opine that people spend money to buy happiness, which certainly doesn't strike as news. However, they add to it that those purchases which offer us an experience such as a holiday, or a fun ride produce more happiness compared to material objects, in general.

This however in doesn't exclude car accessories because they too directly or indirectly give a pleasurable experience and a one that lasts. For instance, luxury audio devices viz. car MP3 players, amplifiers, etc. serve the owner for a long time and induce happiness or relaxation every time they're used.

On the other hand Automotive Security Devices, don't give us pleasure directly, but they do provide an assurance of safety. Their importance was recently highlighted with the surge in gas thefts in many parts of the world, wherein the sales of gas caps picked up. Many other accessories such asair bags, central-locking systems provide similar comfort and luxury.
car-gps.jpg

Another feature of auto accessories is that many of them are based on electronics, viz. music and video players, computer aided safety and navigation systems. Given the fast pace of inventions and innovations registered in this branch of engineering, the tech-savvy folks prefer to remain in sync with the latest technologies and the benefits they offer.

So much for those who pay for their preferred accessories but it seems that thieves who steal them aren't much behind as well. GPS navigation systems appear to be quite popular with them these days, as a recent story in Boston Globe highlights it.

Automotive accessories continue to be hot cakes across the board, even with thieves!

Rising fuel prices and shifting consumer demand away from gas-guzzling automobiles towards tinier, fuel efficient autos have left automakers thinking on a different tangent. Also, this new line of thought seems to be considering
carrying-plastic-bags.jpg
eco-friendliness with as much emphasis as fuel economy.

Not to say that fuel-economy and eco-friendliness are exclusive of each other but that eco-friendliness is on top of the minds of the industry. This is apparent from the words of the President of Honda R&D Co., Ltd, Mr Masaaki Kato who expects a race towards “greener mobility,” with the eventual objective to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions.

Automakers are already riding the 'go green' surf with some big automobile and auto part manufacturers like the Ferrari working to roll out new hybrid models, or the Toyota planning to power the Prius with solar energy and Jaguar and Ford working together to bring out state-of-the-art Flywheel Hybrid Technology to autos.
masaaki-kato-honda.jpg

While a focus on alternative fuel sources or efficient engines has its own place in attaining the ultimate goal, some automotive manufacturers have experimented with newer, lighter materials to design automotive chassis, which head towards the same goal, albeit differently.

Ironically, one such material is a plastic! Pure, artificial, man-made plastic called the “Tegris.” A product of the Milliken and Co., it's a very light thermoplastic composite comprising 100% polypropylene.

The Plastic's Eco-friendliness

It's environment friendly qualities can be assessed on three counts, namely recyclability, being lightweight and being glass-free.

  • Recyclability: The material's composition makes it compatible with polypropylene recycle streams.
    recyclable.jpg

  • Light Weight: In comparison to several other composite structures viz. Glass-filled, this one leads to a high degree of weight reduction in objects moulded from it. Being light weight means that autos would consume less fuel and thus lead to less pollution.

  • Glass-Free: Compared to the safety issues (viz. skin irritation) encountered with the manufacture of glass-filled composites, this material doesn't pose the same concerns.

The Plastic's Auto-friendliness

It's auto-friendliness is derived from it's properties of impact-resistance, design flexibility and stiffness.

The plastic can achieve an impact resistance of two through fifteen times more than other thermoplastic
jeep-renegade.jpg
composites. Additionally, it's performance isn't affected even at low temperatures (-40C). Along with the stiffness it offers, it's design flexibility enables molding of the material to a high precision.

The material has already been used in the manufacture of the Jeep's Renegade Concept, showcased at the Detroit Motor Show 2008. The concept automobile housing a diesel engine makes use of the plastic for the chassis, seat frames, door panels, interior molded tub and in the instrument panel. The Jeep can achieve a fuel economy of over 110 miles per gallon.

It seems there are many ways and their combinations by which auto makers want to achieve eco-friendliness and that “Plastic,” the proverbial environmental menace is perhaps too useful to be shunned outright.

Your car’s suspension and steering system is complex and is structured to provide you with a smooth and a safe driving experience. A periodic check of this system would not only enhance your driving experience but also enable you to fix problems much before they spin out of control.

The system of suspension and steering is positioned low in an automobile. As a result, not only does it bear a continuous onslaught of the road conditions, but is also vulnerable to being hit by rocks an other objects due to its low position. Hence it becomes crucial to review this system regularly to forestall the car from breaking down.

The following are some of the most common symptoms indicating a problem with the suspension system for you to keep an eye on. Remember that one problem or several in conjunction with each other may cause the various symptoms.

  1. A Loose Steering: Here you would observe that the steering wanders excessively and appears to move freely from side to side.

    • Possible Causes: The possible causes for these symptoms include loose wheel bearings, loose/worn out steering linkage, faulty shock absorbers, worn ball joints, low power steering fluid, worn strut bearings, worn/broken tie rods or even steering rack, and broken steering rack mounts.

      check-suspension.jpg
    • Solutions: You’d need to carefully inspect each of the parts to know whether they are intact, need service or replacements. While inappropriate levels of steering fluid can be easily corrected by filling up the steering fluid reservoir, worn out and broken parts would need to be serviced properly or replaced completely.
  2. The Car Swaying To One Side: You would often experience while driving that the steering automatically pulls towards one side, and it can be highly inconvenient to drive with this issue cropping up.

    • Possible Causes: When faced with such a situation you can expect the following reasons to be the causes: an inappropriate tire pressure, uneven wearing of tires, improperly aligned wheels at the front end, malfunctioning steering components (viz. steering rack, tie-rods), wheel bearings that are loose, bent/loose front-end parts, faulty shocks or a sticking brake caliper.
    • Solutions: The advantages of maintaining the right tire pressure extend beyond the system of suspension and steering. By keeping your car’s tires properly inflated you could save a lot of money through some great fuel economy. Fuel economy aside, to rid your car of this problem you’d need to have the alignment of the front wheels and bearings checked and adjusted. While some components need to be serviced, you may have to replace others, such as the shocks.
  3. Excessive Wobbling Of The Wheels: If you're struck by this bug you’d experience the wheels to wiggle to-and-fro.

    • Possible Causes: This behavior of the automobile can often be attributed to inappropriately balanced wheels, inappropriate inflation and irregular wearing of tires, or worn out part of the steering.

      tire-pressure.jpg
    • Solutions: Wheel balance can be corrected with professional help, if you find the tires to have worn unevenly replace them, but do so in pairs. Additionally, the tie rods, steering rack need to be assessed for damage and repaired if needed.
  4. The Car Bounces After You Cross A Bump: You experience that the car keeps bouncing even after you have crossed a bump.

    • Possible Causes: If you experience such a situation the shock of your automobile might have worn out or the leaf spring might have slipped or badly damaged.
    • Solutions: The shocks if they were worn would need to be replaced and so would the broken leaf spring. If the leaf spring has just slipped then a simple repair would work.
  5. A Slipping Steering: If you get a feeling that during turns the steering wheel slips back and for, you might have an issue to take care of.

    • Possible Causes: The most likely reasons for this behavior could be inappropriate levels of power steering fluid, a malfunctioning power steering pump, worn power steering belt, leaky power steering rack or badly damaged steering rack mounts.
    • Solutions: The power steering pump needs to be checked for pressure, the belt tightened or replaced, and leaky steering racks for leaks repaired or replaced as needed.
  6. Hard To Steer: You begin to notice a difference in the effort you need to exert to turn the steering.

    • Possible Causes: The varied reasons for a hard steering include low or uneven tire pressure, loose steering pump drive belt, low/inappropriate power steering fluid levels, incorrect front end alignment, a malfunctioning power steering pump, bent and badly lubricated front end components.
    • Solutions: The need to have a correct tire pressure can’t be overemphasized and so is the brake fluid level. The belt needs to be adjusted or replaced and the pump repaired. Though defective parts need to be replaced, proper lubrication of the front-end parts can surely take care of it if poor lubrication is the only problem.
  7. Vibrating Steering Wheel: When faced with this issue you would experience the transmitted oscillations when you hold the wheel.

    • Possible Causes: The problem is often attributed to incorrect tire pressure, loose wheel bearings, out of balance tires, worn or bent front end components, and improper front end alignment.

      front-end-alignment.jpg
    • Solutions: To resolve the problem, inflate tires to correct pressure, and balance the tires as well. Further, an adjustment of wheel bearings and thorough service of the front-end alignment might have to be carried out.
  8. Knocking When You Cross Bumps: When faced with this problem you would feel knocking or clunking when you go over the bumps.

    • Possible Causes: Most often this problem crops up when either the shock or the struts have worn out. Another cause is a worn out ball joint.
    • Solutions: After you assess the damage, replacement of shocks, strut bearings and ball joints are perhaps the best cure.
  9. Screeching Sound: If faced with this issue you’d hear the sound coming out of the steering mechanism when you attempt a turn at low speed.

    • Possible Causes: The causes could be low levels of steering fluid or a loose/worn out belt.
    • Solutions: Fill in the fluid as needed and adjust or replace the belt after assessment.
As is often said prevention is the best cure, prevention in the context of an automobile boils down to its timely maintenance. The suspension and steering system too needs it, so that your vehicle performs well and gives you the least amount of trouble. The following maintenance schedule should keep this system in good shape.

steering system maintenance schedule.jpg
Even if you haven’t been keeping to the schedule of maintenance, never mind, you can begin afresh. Further, if you’re faced with any issues described in this post you would be able identify them and take corrective action.

Diesel powered automobiles have somewhat been shunned till now for being less environment friendly, but given the recent surge in gas prices worldwide, could the demand for clean and fuel efficient diesel engines rise.

Over the last couple of days the automobile industry has seen a lot of action with the increases in
diesel-engine.jpg
oil prices, a decline in demand for bigger vehicles (SUVs), increased interest in the smaller vehicles such as Smart For Two and the news of a breakthrough by the Japanese company Genepax for developing a water-powered car. However, there still appears to be sometime left for the innovations and breakthroughs to hit the markets full-on.

When it comes to diesel, prices of diesel might not be the ultimate quality to attract car buyers towards automobiles driven by diesel engines. For instance, around the beginning of this month the average price per gallon of diesel oil in the U.S. was US$4.70, which was in fact higher than the cost of gas by 73 cents. Furthermore, it's also an increase of over US$1.90 from last year. All in all the diesel prices too are on the rise and why shouldn't they, when diesel too is derived from crude oil. As the price of crude oil varies, the price of diesel too should change with it.

So Where Do The Benefits Lie?

Apparently, they lie in cost savings due to more efficient and cleaner diesel engines being developed. Consider this, diesel engine manufactures are aiming to produce auto engines that are efficient enough to provide between 30% to 40% fuel economy. Thus even if consumers paid 10% more for premium diesel, given the engines' fuel economy it would still be profitable for them.

Many big companies such as Mercedes, Chrysler LLC, BMW, are now in the process of either launching or have already launched fuel efficient diesel vehicles.

One such diesel engine has been developed by Robert Bosh LLC, Germany, a company known for supplying automotive parts viz. braking system parts, automobile electrical system parts, etc. The diesel engine developed by Bosch is a common-rail fuel injection system. Launched first by the company in 1997, the engine is into its third generation now and a fourth generation is expected sometime in the future. The engine promises triple benefits. First, a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy. Second, up to 50 percent more torque than regular gasoline and a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

How It Works?

The actuator in the third-generation common rail injector comprises a series of stacked piezo electric segments embedded deep within the injector body, close to the injector nozzle. The piezo electric control solenoid comes with a super fast switching time and improved precision injection quantity control. This quick response enables more precise control of injection and combustion events. Thus leading to engine applications that have low engine emissions and a much better overall performance. The second-generation system in contrast made use of a magnetic core solenoid, which didn't allow for as quick a response as the third generation one does.

common-rail-system.jpg
The fourth-generation system under development is expected to not only further reduce engine emissions, engine-specific fuel consumption and combustion noise, but increase the engine output as well.

While, diesel driven automobiles do hold promise for better fuel economy, they might be somewhat tougher to market in North America, where diesel engines are thought of as being noisy and less environment friendly, compared to other markets such as Europe. However, according to projections the demand for diesel powered cars would increase and by 2015 is slated to make up 15 percent of the light vehicle market in the U.S.

formula-one.jpg
In the wake of the new guidelines formulated by the governing body of Formula 1, auto makers have already begun developing automobile engines  technologies that would not only generate the needed power but also be
fuel-efficient.

The present scenario in Formula 1 racing includes race cars built upon gasoline driven automobile engines. These engines on an average guzzle up to 70 liters of gas for every 100 kilometers of distance covered. This fact alone is sufficient to reveal how environmentally unfriendly the present technology of race cars may be considered.
In order to encourage entry of environment friendly race cars to the F1 events, beginning with the year 2009, the governing body Federation Internationale de L'Automobile, would now allow even hybrid
automobiles to take part in the races. These cars can have an additional power up to 80 hp and at the same time would be engineered to lead to lesser CO2 emissions to cut back on pollution.
The focus is on incorporating two technologies, hybrid propulsion and regenrative braking. Though both the technologies have been around for sometime, what's different is their use in the Formula 1 racing domain.
Hybride
electric vehicles
combine the conventional gas based auto engine and a rechargeable energy storage system. Today's hybrids run on many types of drivetrain systms, which are also used to distinguish between these vehicles. Some of these systems are:

  • Parallel
    hybrid system:
One of the most popular of all, this system incorporates both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE) connected with a mechanical
transmission systems to power the wheels.
    .

  • Series
    hybrid system:
This system works by the engine driving the electric generator rather than the engine directly powering the wheels.
  • Combined

hybrid system: The wheels in this system can be powered by both electrical or mechanical transmission  as needed. This is made possible by the use of power-split devices that enable power paths from the engine to the wheels, and disconnect any one of the sources to let the other take over.
parallel-hybrid-electric-vehicle.jpg

  • Other
    Types:
These vehicles are sometimes classified by the degree of hybridization as full hybrid or strong hybrid, power assist hybrid, mild hybrids and a plug-in hybrid. Sometimes they are categorized based on the source of power as electric (ICE) hybrid, fuel cell hybrid, hydraulic hybrid, pneumatic hybrid, human and environmental power hybrids.

  • Regenerative
kinetic energy recovery system (KERS): This is the other technology to be employed controls vehicle speed by converting a portion of its kinetic energy (energy of motion) into another useful form of energy. The energy so produced could then be stored as electric charge in the Battery , or as compressed gas/air or in flywheels to be used again by the vehicle.
regenerative-braking-system.jpg
For instance a KERS using a compressed air system for a vehicle installed with a rotary sliding vane engine, a compressor, a combustion chamber and a motor may work as follows: The braking may be achieved by connecting the rotor of the compressor to a wheel and braking rotation of the rotor. Then the rotary motion of the compressor's rotor is used to generate compressed air, which is then stored in the surge tank to be utilized further.Reportedly, BMW has initiated work and is supposed to use the technology in the 2009 Formula One season. It is additionally experimenting with using individual components such as supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries. Other car makers are soon to follow
suit.
From a sport as popular as F1, that attracts an audience of 50 million people who completely follow it and over 300 million who catch some part of it, the world might be in for some breakthrough environment friendly technologies as they percolate into everyday transport.

The following tips should help you achieve fuel economy as well as help protect the environment.

  1. To begin with, choose the right car for your needs, if just driving around the town is what your needs entail, procure a lighter vehicle (hybrid or gas driven) instead of a big gas-guzzler.
  1. Considered as one of the most important factors affecting fuel economy, the need to ensure the right tire pressure for your automobile can’t be overemphasized. Check the pressure of the tires at least once a week, remember that even over-inflated tires lead to higher gas consumption.

  1. Timely maintenance of your car that covers ensuring the right levels of all essential engine fluids and keeping all the systems in shape can make all the difference.

  1. If you keep your car cleaned up, it not only enhances its sheen but also prevents any dirt or snow to create unnecessary drag and frees the engine from working harder.

  1. Until it’s absolutely necessary don’t carry extra baggage in the car’s trunk, as it would only increase the weight and force the engine to consume more gas.

  1. Drive well within the fuel economy range of your vehicle, if you aren’t already used to driving slow enough then you’d need to make some adjustments here, but be assured that the benefits are real. The difference of gas consumption between speeds of 55 and 65mph can be as big as 2MPG.

  1. Accelerating your car like a dragster burns up fuel real quickly, whenever you have to step on the gas do it gradually.

  1. If possible rest your left foot on the floor than on the brake pedal, as even a slight press on the brakes could significantly increase the drag.

  1. Operate the air conditioner wisely and only when you need it. If you can make do just by opening the windows partially for cool air it’s good. But remember that on highways opening up windows can backfire by creating more drag, so you’re better off with the windows up and the air conditioner on. Further, once the inside weather is cool enough turn down the power of the air conditioner, lest it puts undue pressure on your car’s engine.

  1. Pick and choose the gas stations with the best prices in your area, there are lots of websites that keep a track of existing prices in different localities/regions.
